Abstract

Just as Earth’s resources deplete, both governmental and private entities are turning to outer space as a potential solution. Asteroids and the moon, with their abundant water and valuable metals, are emerging as focal points for resource extraction and utilization. This paper explores the economic implications of space exploration and development, focusing on asteroid mining, lunar resource acquisition, and the broader potential of space-based ventures. It examines the challenges and opportunities associated with the technological advancements required to exploit these space resources, the economic models for space utilization, and the evolving landscape of space law. The discussion extends to the role of satellites in enhancing our understanding of Earth and space, as well as the emerging contributions of private companies like Planetary Resources, Deep Space Industries, and Moon Express in the space economy. The paper concludes with a look at the current state of the space economy, highlighting the need for clear regulations and collaborative efforts to foster sustainable and equitable growth in space exploration.
