Abstract
Blue ecocriticism is a recent area of environmental studies that focuses on oceans, water bodies, and marine ecosystems in literature and visual culture. Avatar: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron, presents a powerful depiction of the relationship between Indigenous communities and the marine environment. The film centers on the Metkayina clan, whose culture, traditions, and spiritual beliefs are closely connected with the ocean. Through a blue ecocritical approach, the movie reveals the harmful effects of colonial expansion and capitalist exploitation on marine life and ecological balance. This study examines how the film portrays the sea as a living space filled with cultural memory, emotional connection, and environmentally significance. It also analyses the resistance of Indigenous communities against ecological destruction caused by industrial forces. By focusing on themes such as marine biodiversity, ecological harmony, and environmental ethics, the paper argues that the film promotes awareness about ocean conservation and sustainable coexistence between humans and nature.
