Abstract

Casearia graveolens Dalzell is a medicinal plant from the family Salicaceae and is found extensively across the tropical and subtropical areas of South and Southeast Asia. Traditionally, the plant has been used in the treatment of fever, inflammation, skin diseases, liver ailments, wound healing, and gastrointestinal disorders. This chapter provides a detailed overview of the botanical description, geographic distribution, phytochemistry, traditional use, and pharmacological importance of C. graveolens. It is found through the investigation that there are numerous biologically active chemicals, such as clerodane diterpenoids. Flavonoids, phenolics, coumarins, glycosides, tannins, alkaloids, and essential oils can be isolated from the plant material, which makes it biologically very active. Experimental studies have shown its antioxidative, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antiangiogenic, and anticancer effects. In addition, it has been pointed out in the chapter that there is a necessity to validate the role of medicinal plants in the treatment of liver diseases due to their high incidence and prevalence across the world. Recent pharmacological studies have demonstrated that Casearia graveolens can serve as a potent source of new bioactive compounds for the development of drugs in the future.
