Abstract

The Quantum Internet represents a revolutionary paradigm in distributed information processing, providing unconditional security through the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. Unlike classical networks bounded by computational complexity assumptions, quantum communication leverages quantum key distribution, quantum teleportation, and entanglement distribution to establish information-theoretic security. This chapter proposes an Adaptive Entanglement Routing and Hybrid Quantum Key Distribution (AER-HQKD) framework designed for heterogeneous, metropolitan-to-continental quantum networks. We introduce an optimized entanglement purification and swapped path-selection protocol that mitigates fiber attenuation, decoherence, and quantum memory constraints. By incorporating continuous-variable, the proposed architecture maximizes secret key throughput across varying link distances while maintaining fidelity thresholds above . Extensive numerical and physical-layer simulations across multi-node topologies demonstrate that the AER-HQKD framework enhances entanglement distribution rates by up to 38.6% and reduces quantum state latency by 24.2% compared to state-of-the-art benchmarks, establishing a robust foundation for next-generation quantum-secured infrastructures.
