Abstract:
This chapter explores the limitations of traditional computing architectures and the emergence of neuromorphic computing as a promising alternative. It discusses the challenges of scaling traditional computing architectures, the memory hierarchy, and parallel processing limitations. The chapter also introduces the concept of neuromorphic computing, its brain-inspired architecture, and its advantages, including low power consumption, real-time processing, and scalability. Finally, it surveys existing neuromorphic hardware platforms, examines synapse and neuron models, and discusses spike-based communication. The chapter concludes by highlighting the potential applications of neuromorphic computing in computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics.
