Abstract:

The rapid advancements in information technology and the evolution of telecommunications since the onset of the information age have led to a significant surge in the exchange of information and data globally. Even though this rapid progress has been positive in term of economy but there has also been increase in concerns with regards to privacy of the individuals as advancement of electronic data processing has led to setting up of extensive data banks to improve the collecting, processing, and sharing of personal information by public administration and large enterprises. As accurately remarked by renowned Mathematician Clive Humby “Data is the new oil. Like, oil data is valuable but if unrefined it cannot be used” therefore these data banks have been earning top dollar for the data they acquire and process. The largest corporations in the world currently worth over trillions of dollars for instance Amazon, Alphabet (Google’s parent company), Facebook, Uber, Apple, Microsoft[i] to name a few are in business of data banks.
