Abstract

The pressing challenge of space debris, resulting from historical space activities and numbering in the hundreds of thousands, calls for urgent attention within the realm of space law. The existing legal framework, established before widespread recognition of the issue, proves inadequate in addressing the complexities of space debris, leading to risks predicted by the Kessler Syndrome. Notable incidents, such as collisions and deliberate destruction of satellites, contribute significantly to the problem, necessitating robust regulations. The study evaluates the effectiveness of the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee in addressing the space debris crisis, proposes new regulations for comprehensive management, and advocates for international cooperation to tackle the persistence of old debris growth. A critical reassessment of existing legal frameworks, technological advancements, and collaborative strategies is vital to ensuring the sustainable utilization of outer space for future exploration and endeavours.
