Abstract:

The field of bioinspired electronics is poised to revolutionize communication systems by drawing inspiration from biological processes. This Chapter provides an introduction to bioinspired electronics, starting with an overview of traditional electronic communication systems and transitioning into the concept of “From Silicon to Synapses,” which highlights the shift towards mimicking biological systems in electronic designs. The importance of bioinspired approaches in shaping a new era of communication is emphasized, setting the stage for a discussion on bioinspired circuit design. This section explores neuromorphic and brain-inspired computing, detailing the implementation of neural networks using bioinspired circuitry and the integration of synaptic and neuronal components into electronic systems. Memristor technology is introduced, along with neuromorphic hardware architectures and case studies demonstrating successful applications in bioinspired electronics. Moving forward, the Chapter delves into brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) for communication, covering their understanding, applications in communication and control systems, and the challenges and advancements in bioelectronic communication interfaces.
