Abstract
Besides solely utilizing space as a region or harnessing its physical attributes like microgravity and orbital positions for satellite operations, there’s a growing inclination toward utilizing natural resources exceptionally valuable minerals from outer space like the moon, asteroids, and other planets. India’s journey in space law navigates a trajectory shaped by visionary policies, strategic initiatives, and evolving international engagements.
This article delves into the foundational stages of India’s space program, tracing its legal foundations from the early policy directives and strategic decisions to its alignment with principles globally followed related with space regulations, the lacking in dedicated legislation, institutions like ISRO in shaping early policies and their active role, collaborating with scientific bodies, and launching pioneering missions, also envisions future prospects, including the imperative need for space traffic management and the role of international collaboration in shaping India’s trajectory in the ever-expanding legal orbits of space exploration. Emphasizing the necessity for a comprehensive legal framework, it examines the gap in legislative provisions specific to space activities and the impact on India’s early space missions, India’s historical trajectory in space law, outlining requirement for robust legal background to oversee its expanding initiatives amidst international collaborations and evolving technological advancements in space industry.
