Abstract
Using “Hayavadana” by Girish Karnad as a case study, this article explores the essence of folk drama and its manifestations, especially in the context of Indian theatre. It highlights the consequences of impulsivity of the three main characters of the play and how folk drama encapsulates the mindset, lifestyle, and societal perspectives of specific regions, transmitted orally or through performances. Karnad’s reworking of folktales and myths for contemporary issues is discussed, emphasizing his fusion of classical and folk elements in his plays. The article explores the complex themes of identity, heedlessness, and the human condition during critical situations. It also touches upon the adaptability and improvisational nature of folk stories and their relevance across time and space. The article gives the answer for the following questions. What drives Hyavadana’s heedlessness? Is it a desire for freedom, a need for self-expression, or a response to societal expectations? How does Hyavadana’s heedlessness impact the people around? Does it lead to conflict, growth, or transformation?
