Abstract:

This chapter, titled “The Role of Women Successors in Family Business with Reference to India,” examines the evolving dynamics and contributions of women in family-owned businesses within the Indian context. Historically, family businesses in India have predominantly seen male successors, but there is a growing recognition of the vital role that women play in these enterprises. The abstract provides an overview of the key themes explored in the chapter, including the changing landscape of gender roles in family businesses, challenges faced by women successors, and the impact of cultural and societal factors on their leadership roles. The chapter begins by acknowledging the traditional patriarchal structure of family businesses and the historical exclusion of women from leadership roles. It then delves into contemporary shifts, emphasizing the increasing acceptance of women as successors and decision-makers. Through a review of case studies and empirical data, the chapter analyzes the unique challenges faced by women in assuming leadership roles in family businesses, ranging from gender bias to preconceived notions about their capabilities. The chapter also highlights the importance of mentorship, education, and support systems in empowering women successors to overcome barriers and contribute effectively to the success of the family enterprise.
