Abstract:
The chapter titled “The Sustainable Future of Computing: Building Energy Efficient and Eco-Friendly Technologies” highlights the urgent need for the computing industry to adopt sustainable practices in response to its significant environmental impact. The rapid growth of computing technology has led to increased energy consumption and electronic waste, posing serious environmental challenges. Structured into four sections, the chapter begins with an overview of the environmental impact of computing technologies, emphasizing high energy consumption and the issue of electronic waste. The chapter underscores the importance of transitioning to sustainable computing practices for both environmental and economic reasons. It provides examples of successful initiatives, such as green data centers, energy-efficient processing units, and the integration of renewable energy sources into computing infrastructure. Extended producer responsibility is emphasized, encouraging manufacturers to be accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products. This involves designing products that are easier to repair, reuse, and recycle, thereby reducing electronic waste.
