Abstract

The precise documentation of crime scene particulars is paramount, not only to furnish investigators with critical information they might not otherwise possess, but also to aid judicial proceedings in the accurate reconstruction of events. The integrity and evidentiary value of a crime scene necessitate a systematic and meticulous approach to data collection, particularly as the initial encounter with such scenes often presents significant challenges for first responders (Sheshtar et al., 2025). To overcome these inherent difficulties and enhance the overall efficiency and precision of forensic investigations, contemporary forensic science increasingly integrates advanced technological tools, such as drones, Geographic Information Systems, and remote sensing. These technologies offer unprecedented capabilities for surveying, documenting, and analyzing complex crime scenes, thereby transforming traditional investigative methodologies. This chapter delves into the sophisticated applications of these technologies, exploring how they facilitate detailed crime scene mapping, evidence identification, and the creation of comprehensive 3D models for reconstruction and analysis. Specifically, the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with high-resolution cameras and Lidar sensors enables rapid and non-invasive documentation of large outdoor scenes, providing detailed aerial imagery and three-dimensional spatial data. Furthermore, Geographic Information Systems provide a robust framework for organizing, analyzing, and visualizing this spatial data, enabling investigators to identify patterns, relationships, and anomalies that might be overlooked using conventional methods. Similarly, remote sensing techniques further augment these capabilities by capturing data from a distance, offering insights into environmental factors and concealed evidence through various spectral bands. This comprehensive approach significantly enhances the evidentiary yield from crime scenes, ensuring a more thorough and accurate understanding of incident dynamics for both investigative and judicial purposes. The subsequent sections will explore the specific mechanisms through which drones, GIS, and remote sensing contribute to crime scene analysis, detailing their operational principles, practical applications, and the challenges associated with their implementation in forensic contexts.
