Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has also enhanced the use of digital technologies in language learning, and is changing the way languages are taught and learnt in various educational contexts. The study discusses AI’s impact on language acquisition, the significant opportunities and hurdles of AI tools, learner experiences with AI tools, and the impact on education. The research adopts a mixed method design, involving the collection of quantitative data on learners’ experiences and the use of AI tools, and the collection of qualitative data through structured interviews with language learners and the educators they interact with. The outcomes show that AI has great potential to support language learning in the following ways: by tailoring instruction, offering immediate feedback, adapting learning exercises, evaluating automatically, and engaging in conversation. Despite these advantages, there are also some difficulties with AI language learning, including issues with the accuracy of the feedback, privacy concerns, low digital literacy, algorithmic bias, and the overreliance on technology. Furthermore, learner satisfaction is a combination of both; the benefits of personalisation and feedback valued by learners are immediate and personalised feedback, whilst the issues highlighted are reliability and reduction of human interaction. The paper also presents recommendations for educational approaches and frameworks that can facilitate the successful integration of AI in language learning – teacher training, digital literacy, a responsible approach to using AI, and proper data protection. By showcasing the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in language education, this study highlights the potential of AI to enhance language learning alongside the crucial role of human teachers, guidance, and interaction. The analysis contributes to the research and development of the language education field, language learners, language education institutions, and language education technology developers who want to enhance the effectiveness of AI-based language learning and ensure its appropriate and responsible use. The findings are relevant to the broader body of knowledge on educational technology as they offer empirical knowledge of the viable application of AI in the modern language learning landscape.
