Abstract

Digital literacy is a skill that is critical to university students when digital technologies are becoming more prevalent in the teaching and learning process, in communication, and in academic activity. This research paper examines the relationship between digital literacy and academic performance of university students, especially regarding the access, evaluation, creation and effective use of digital information and educational technologies. The research is designed as a Mixed Method Approach in which quantitative data related to the digital literacy of students and academic outcomes are linked with qualitative data obtained from structured interviews with teachers and students. The findings suggest that digital literacy is generally related to a higher level of academic engagement, access to learning resources, research skills and academic achievement. Some students face challenges however, due to differences in access to digital devices, connectivity to internet, tech skills, and confidence in using digital platforms. Despite these issues, digital literacy helps students access and use online academic materials, engage with virtual learning and classrooms, work together with their peers and accomplish academic work more effectively. Furthermore, students’ academic experiences mirror the relevance of digital competencies; students who possess higher digital skills demonstrate higher levels of confidence, flexibility and independence in the learning process, while students who have less knowledge about digital literacy might struggle with finding reliable information, using education platforms, and completing academic tasks using the support of digital tools. The paper also presents institutional strategies such as targeted digital skills training, enhanced access to technological resources, and embedding digital literacy education in the university curriculum to enhance students’ digital literacy.
