Abstract
Language plays a central role in shaping identity, influencing power relations, and constructing social realities. Within English Studies, the interconnected concepts of language, identity, and power have become essential areas of inquiry, revealing how discourse and representation influence individual experiences and broader cultural ideologies. This paper explores the dynamic relationship between these concepts by examining key theoretical perspectives from discourse analysis, poststructuralism, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, and critical linguistics. It highlights how language functions not only as a means of communication but also as a social and political instrument that reflects and reinforces systems of authority, inclusion, and exclusion. The study further investigates how literary and non-literary texts represent identities related to gender, race, class, ethnicity, nationality, and culture, while simultaneously challenging dominant ideological structures. Drawing upon contemporary scholarship, the paper demonstrates that discourse is deeply embedded in institutional practices and social power, shaping perceptions of reality and influencing cultural identities. It also discusses the growing significance of digital communication and global media in transforming identity construction and ideological representation in the twenty-first century. The findings suggest that English Studies has evolved beyond traditional literary criticism into an interdisciplinary field that critically examines the social functions of language and representation. By fostering critical literacy and ideological awareness, the discipline enables readers and researchers to recognize hidden power structures within texts and everyday communication. Ultimately, this study emphasizes that understanding the interplay of language, identity, and power is essential for promoting inclusive scholarship, cultural awareness, and social justice in an increasingly interconnected world.
