Abstract

The proliferation of mobile devices and the widespread adoption of cloud computing have profoundly transformed how individuals interact with digital information, creating new frontiers and challenges for forensic investigations (Sharma & Choudhary, 2023). This evolution necessitates a comprehensive understanding of both the technical intricacies involved in extracting and analyzing digital evidence from these platforms and the complex legal frameworks governing such processes. This chapter delves into the methodologies employed by forensic investigators to leverage mobile device technologies for uncovering crucial digital evidence, while also addressing the inherent difficulties in maintaining the chain of custody for volatile cloud data. Furthermore, it explores the burgeoning complexities introduced by data fragmentation across diverse devices and cloud services, alongside the persistent challenge of device heterogeneity that demands specialized tools and expertise. This chapter aims to demystify these technical challenges, offering insights into advanced forensic techniques and tools for both mobile and cloud environments (Fakiha, 2024). Moreover, the legal and ethical considerations underpinning the admissibility of digital evidence in judicial proceedings will be thoroughly examined, emphasizing the critical balance between investigative imperatives and individual privacy rights (Alenezi, 2023). Ultimately, the success of modern criminal investigations increasingly hinges on the ability of forensic practitioners to adeptly navigate these intertwined technical and legal landscapes. The ever-evolving digital landscape, characterized by an exponential increase in data volume and fragmentation across disparate platforms, further exacerbates the complexities of mobile and cloud forensics, necessitating continuous adaptation of investigative strategies. Understanding these challenges is paramount for enhancing the efficacy and efficiency of digital and cloud forensic investigations. This chapter will therefore systematically explore the unique challenges presented by these environments, highlighting the necessity for specialized forensic methodologies and tools. A primary technical challenge involves the acquisition of live evidence from dynamic cloud environments and the preservation of data integrity amidst data volatility and anti-forensics measures.
