Abstract

The traditional medical systems of South Asia—Ayurveda and Siddha—conceptualize human physiology through homeodynamic regulatory triads known respectively as Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and Mukkuttram (Vali, Azhal, and Iyyam). While historically regarded as metaphysical abstractions by modern reductionist biomedicine, contemporary research in systems biology increasingly validates these systemic humors as early models of complex, non-linear biological networks. This chapter demonstrates the physiological and biochemical convergence between these traditional humoral concepts and modern systems medicine, systematically correlating Vata/Vali with autonomic neuro-motor signaling and cellular kinetics, Pitta/Azhal with metabolic turnover, thermogenesis, and mitochondrial oxidation, and Kapha/Iyyam with structural anabolism, mucosal barrier integrity, and innate immunity. Drawing from an observational cohort of 420 patients presenting with multi-system metabolic and inflammatory syndromes, this work outlines an integrative translational framework. By correlating radial arterial pulse diagnostics (Naadi pariksha and En-vagai thervu) with autonomic tone, heart rate variability, and multi-omic serum biomarkers, this study establishes a clinically viable pathway that aligns traditional phyto-mineral remedies with contemporary medical science.
