Abstract
The Kumbh Mela is recognized as one of the world’s largest religious congregations, attracting millions of pilgrims, visitors, and service personnel. Managing sanitation and cleanliness during such a large-scale gathering poses significant operational, environmental, and public health challenges. This study examines the implementation of 5S techniques Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustaining sanitation and cleanliness management during the Kumbh Mela. The research focuses on understanding how structured sanitation practices contribute to effective waste management, improved hygiene standards, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability. The study adopted a descriptive research design and utilized primary data collected from 100 respondents, including sanitation workers, health officers, supervisors, volunteers, and administrative staff involved in sanitation operations during the Kumbh Mela. Convenience sampling was employed, and data were collected through structured questionnaires, observations, and interviews. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS-based percentage analysis and trend interpretation methods. The findings indicate that implementation of 5S principles significantly improves sanitation coordination, waste segregation practices, placement of sanitation infrastructure, public awareness, and cleanliness monitoring systems. The study further reveals that regular training, standardized sanitation procedures, and public participation contribute positively to maintaining hygienic conditions during mass religious gatherings. The research concludes that the 5S methodology offers a sustainable framework for sanitation management in mega public events and can serve as an operational model for future religious and public gatherings in India.
