Abstract
The pervasiveness of artificial intelligence across sectors—from healthcare diagnostics to financial services, from personalized education to smart city infrastructure—has changed the nature of the human-data relationship. When it comes to information, AI systems are gluttons. They analyze millions of records from datasets to learn patterns, infer preferences from behavioural traces and make predictions that determine opportunities, access and outcomes. The very fact that it is data intensive creates significant tensions between the usefulness the AI can deliver and privacy individuals can and should expect. This chapter looks at the status quo of personal data protection in AI-based systems.
