Abstract

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has evolved into one of the most lucrative sporting ventures worldwide, blending cricket with commerce to create a multi-billion-dollar enterprise. Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has transformed the sports economy through innovative franchise-based revenue models, exponential brand valuation, and unprecedented broadcasting rights deals. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining primary survey data from nine South Indian regions with secondary financial analysis from Deloitte, KPMG, and Brand Finance. Findings reveal that the IPL’s Enterprise Value has grown from USD 1.1 billion in 2008 to a projected USD 18.5 billion in 2025, with a CAGR of 17.2%. Broadcasting rights (USD 9.52 billion for 2023–2027) and diversified sponsorship portfolios (e.g., Tata Group, Saudi Aramco, Dream11) form the financial backbone of the league. Beyond revenue, the IPL catalyzes employment, tourism, and tax contributions, positioning it as a national economic asset. Survey insights confirm high digital engagement (84%), strong franchise loyalty (89%), and positive perceptions of economic impact (78%). The paper concludes that the IPL is not merely a sports league but a dynamic business model offering lessons for global sports governance and commercialization.
